What is the Boiler Upgrade Scheme?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) is a UK government initiative launched to support the transition to low-carbon heating systems. As part of the national plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and combat climate change, this scheme offers financial incentives to homeowners and businesses that replace fossil fuel-based heating systems (such as gas, oil, or electric boilers) with energy-efficient, eco-friendly alternatives.

The aim is simple: make green heating more accessible and affordable for everyone in England and Wales.

How Much Can You Save?

Through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, you can claim:

  • £7,500 off the cost of installing an Air Source Heat Pump
  • £7,500 off the cost of installing a Ground Source Heat Pump
  • £5,000 off the cost of installing a Biomass Boiler

These grants are not repayable and are applied directly to your installation cost, meaning you don’t need to worry about out-of-pocket expenses or reclaiming the grant later. Monza Installs handle the entire application and redemption processes on your behalf.

What Does the Grant Cover?

The Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant can be used to support the cost of installing the following:

Air Source Heat Pumps

These systems absorb heat from the outside air to provide heating and hot water.

Key Points:

  • Up to 300–400% efficient
  • Cheaper to run than traditional boilers
  • Ideal for most UK homes, especially when well-insulated

Ground Source Heat Pumps

These systems use natural heat from the ground to provide heating and hot water.

Key Points:

  • Extremely energy-efficient
  • A great long-term investment
  • Suitable for properties with outdoor space for underground pipework

Biomass Boilers

Biomass systems burn wood pellets, chips, or logs to generate heat.

Key Points:

  • A renewable alternative to oil or gas boilers
  • Best for homes off the gas grid
  • Cost-effective for larger homes

With LA Flex it’s targeted towards those on low income but not on benefits and those in situations in life where living in a cold home could make things worse. This would include the elderly  and those with medical conditions that are worsened by cold environments.

Most local authorities would class ‘Low Income’ households as those with less than £31,000 as their total household income per year, but these figures do fluctuate in areas, particularly where the cost of living is higher than average. You must be a “Low Income Household” and meet one of the criteria which results in you being affected negatively by living in a cold household to be entitled to LA Flex Funding.

Who is Eligible?

The scheme is open to:

  • Homeowners
  • Private landlords
  • Small business owners
  • Self-build properties

Basic eligibility criteria include:

  • A valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC), typically no more than 10 years old
  • Your current system must be a fossil fuel-based boiler (oil, gas, electric)
  • The property must not be already connected to a heat network
  • Installations must be completed by an MCS-certified installer (which we are!)

If you’re not sure whether you qualify, don’t worry,  just get in touch and we’ll help assess your eligibility.
