Who Can Get a Free Boiler & What is the Criteria?

The ECO scheme was set up with the intention of helping households on the lowest incomes to improve their energy efficiency and reduce their energy bills. In October 2018 the Government launched the latest version of the ECO scheme and it now includes even more benefits – meaning more people than ever may be able to qualify.

You must be in receipt of one of the following benefits to apply:

  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Income based Jobseekers Allowance
  • Income related Employment & Support Allowance
  • Income Support
  • Housing Benefit
  • Tax Credits (Child or Working Tax Credit)
  • You may also qualify if you claim Child Benefit and have an annual income below a threshold. The limit varies between single people and couples and depends on the number of children you have, as set out in the table below.

The style of property in which you live is also taken into consideration too, the older and more inefficient your property is, the more funding it will yield to go towards the grant. If you have a very efficient property, you may need to contribute a small amount to cover the cost of the install.

Finally, you must be on a mains gas, oil or LPG supply. Free Boiler grants are now available to those in off gas areas.

What is ECO4 Funding?

The Energy Company Obligation (ECO) is a government energy efficiency scheme in Great Britain to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. The scheme began in April 2013 with most of our customers qualifying under the Home Cost Reduction Obligation (HHCRO). Under HHCRO, obligated suppliers must provide measures which improve the ability of households to heat their homes. This includes actions that result in heating savings such as the replacement or repair of a boiler, cavity wall insulation and loft insulation.

What if I Don’t Receive Benefits?

For those who don’t receive benefits, you may qualify for the scheme through the Local Authority (LA Flex) programme. LA Flex must define criteria that proves residents are either living in fuel poverty or are on low income and vulnerable to living in a cold home.

Local authorities can use LA Flex to help homeowners and private renting tenants benefit from the installation of home energy efficiency measures. However, the Flexible Eligibility route is not applicable for social housing tenants.
